What type are best suited for this area?  What diseases affect pecans?

While native Northern pecans are not as common in Virginia as in the Midwest, they may find adaptability in many parts of the state, including middle and southern piedmont regions. (see reference for list of cultivars)  Southern pecans are grown in Georgia and other southeastern states including Virginia.
