Deer Deer create a number of problems around the garden and highways. Deer will eat a variety of plants including sweet potato leaves, roses and others. If you have problems with some animal eating your plants, it is probably a deer, however, rabbits, and even raccoons eat vegetation. Deer hooves are a distinct "V" shape. Deer will jump a fence less than seven (7) feet high. Hanging bars of soap or small cloth bags of human hair in trees are effective odor repellents.* Hunger, loss of habitat and loss of predators have made this a large problem. Virginia Tech has information on a suitable fence (see reference below), but it is not practical for the home gardener. There are products available at your local feed and seed stores that will provide a liquid barrier around crops and gardens; reapplication is necessary after a rain. There are native plants that deer are not fond of; however, if hungry, deer will eat almost anything. The following plants are less likely to be eaten by deer; Beautyberry, Butterfly Bush, firethorn, crape myrtle, lilac, heavenly bamboo and black-eyed Susan. Reference(s): |
