Agent’s Corner
Happy February! As we settle into the New Year, I want to take the opportunity to carve out a space where I can provide the membership with state updates, relevant information, and personal tidbits from your agent! Thus, the Agent’s Corner!
Over the past year and a half, I have had the pleasure of supporting and working with this impressive group. I have seen firsthand all the efforts and passion that you have put back into the community. I want to thank you all for the hours that you have dedicated to James City County, Williamsburg, and the surrounding area. According to Better Impact data, the JCCW Master Gardeners contributed 22,124 hours in 2025. With the current value of volunteer time in Virginia at $34.79, this unit’s reported time had an economic impact of almost $770,000! On top of that impressive amount, this group also reached 32,744 community members through direct contacts. Talk about impact!
Looking forward toward 2026, I am excited to start working with the 2026 Board on new ideas and initiatives for the group, as well as getting to know and work alongside the new board members!
Please be on the lookout for future entries in the Agent’s Corner! And of course, if you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact me either by email ([email protected]) or by office phone (757-564-2174).
To wrap up the first Agent’s Corner, I wanted to share with you my favorite nature-related poem,
“When I Am Among The Trees”
by Mary Oliver
When I am among the trees,
especially the willows and the honey locust, equally the beech, the oaks and the pines, they give off such hints of gladness,
I would almost say that they save me, and daily. I am so distant from the hope of myself,in which I have goodness, and discernment, and never hurry through the world
but walk slowly, and bow often. Around me the trees stir in their leaves and call out, “Stay awhile.”
The light flows from their branches.
And they call again, “It’s simple,” they say, “and you too have come
into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled with light, and to shine.”
