Water Wise – A Changing of the Guardians

After four years as co-leaders of the Water Wise Demonstration Garden, we are delighted to announce that Gary Streb will assume leadership effective January 1, 2026. We’re proud to pass the torch to such a capable and dedicated Master Gardener and look forward to continuing on the team—offering support and the occasional bit of “advice”—as Gary carries forward this important work. The garden will remain a welcoming, sustainable landscape for patients, visitors, and staff at the JCC Human Services Building on Olde Towne Road.

First and foremost, we are deeply grateful to the incredible Water Wise team. Over the years, this group has grown from a hardworking weed-pulling crew into an engaging, visitor-focused team that shares gardening knowledge, connects with families, supports children’s activities, and truly enjoys working together. Their camaraderie, enthusiasm, and willingness to engage the public have made the garden a vibrant, welcoming space—and a joy to be part of.

We also thank James City County for its continued support. Our primary contact, Barbara Watson, has been instrumental in helping us navigate infrastructure needs and policy considerations, while giving us flexibility in planning and planting. We’re also grateful to Brad Reinheimer, Assistant County Supervisor, whose frequent visits—and quiet moments of reflection on the garden benches—speak volumes about the value of this space.

Special thanks go to Andrea Case and Regina Jackson of the JCC Sustainability Team for their guidance and technical expertise. Their insight has helped us maintain the garden sustainably, and their encouragement means a great deal to our volunteers.

Finally, we thank Aaron Thompson, Executive Director and CEO of the Old Towne Medical and Dental Center. His appreciation for the garden’s impact reminds us that roughly 15,000 patients and family members pass through this space each year.

This project has been a labor of love—and a source of joy—through COVID, drought, and renovation challenges. We are grateful to our team and to former leaders Susan Neidlinger and Stacy DeMeo.
